Frequently Asked Questions
-
Why are you doing this?
To put pressure on Rogers to change their voice and data plans for iPhone, and,
ideally, for all phones they offer. Voice and data plans offered by Rogers are
extremely uncompetitive when compared to cell phone carriers in other countries.
In particular, data rates for cell phones offered by Rogers, including data
rates for iPhone, can charitably be labeled obscene.
-
Can't Rogers charge whatever they want?
Of course. However, with their bungling of the iPhone launch, the company is
missing a golden opportunity to convert customers from other Canadian cell
phone carriers. With more reasonable plans, Rogers will sign up more customers
and in the end, earn more profit.
-
The prices don't seem that bad to me. What's your problem?
It's not the prices, per se. Rather, it's the poor value for money. Customers using
iPhone with AT&T in the United States, for example, pay approximately one-third
the amount that Canadians do for a comparable level of service. Why is this?
-
I don't care about the iPhone. Why don't you get a life?
Thank-you for your concern about my social life. Do you use a cell phone
or know someone who does? If you don't care for the iPhone, perhaps then you'd
be interested in supporting the
Telecommunications Clarity and Fairness Act.
It's a federal bill designed to protect Canadian cell phone users from
usurious fees imposed by cell phone carriers in Canada.
-
Would you ever sign an iPhone service contract with Rogers?
Yes, if I felt that their plans compared favourably with those in other
countries. I'd even go for something close to what AT&T users have in the
United States. Right now -- no, on principle, an iPhone purchase is out
of the question.

OK, I'm convinced. What can I do?

Who are you?
My name is Russell Gordon. My profession allows me some time at this point
of the year to pursue personal interests. Right now I am interested in
seeing Rogers treat Canadian consumers fairly, and show at least a bare minimum
of respect for our level of intelligence.
